Why Is It That Sometimes When We Urinate We Feel A Burning Sensation?

In a normal situation, urinating should not be the cause of pain or any kind of discomfort. When a burning sensation appears, it often means the urinary tract is irritated or inflamed. The urinary system includes the kidneys, bladder, ureters, and urethra, and problems affecting any part of this system may produce discomfort while urinating.
This symptom is medically termed as dysuria, and it is a symptom that may be experienced by both men and women.

What Causes a Burning Urine Sensation?

Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)

Prostate Problems in Men

In case of men, the swelling a male's prostate gland also known as Prostatitis could be one of the causes of painful urination, a feeling of discomfort in the pelvis, and a difficulty in starting urination. Deterioration of prostate conditions is mostly seen with increasing age; however, younger men can be affected as well.

Other Possible Irritation Triggers

There are few cases when burning urination is not a result of an infection. Slightly, most factors of daily life may also be a source of irritation for the urinary tract and these include:

  • Strong soaps or hygiene products
  • Certain medications
  • Highly acidic foods or drinks
  • Recent sexual activity

Most of the time in such circumstances, the symptoms gradually go away after the person gets rid of the irritant.

If there is an occasional mild burning sensation, it might get better without medical treatment. However, you should try to be seen by a doctor if:

  • The burning sensation during urination is persistent and lasts for several days
  • This is accompanied by fever or chills
  • Blood can be seen in the urine
  • One experiences severe pain in the lower back and in the abdominal area
  • There is an urge to urinate very often and the urination process is also difficult
